DOT & Safety Specialist

The DOT & Safety Specialist is responsible for assuring all employees are operating safely and consistently with Company policies and DOT/FMCSA regulations. In this role, the incumbent is responsible to assist in the administration and implementation of moderate to complex safety programs that cross DOT (Department of Transportation), OSHA and other regulatory agencies.  This includes compliance programs, policies and processes. The goal of this position is to achieve 1) a workplace free of injuries, property damage and business interruption, 2) ensure regulatory compliance, 3) prevent vehicle accidents and 4) maintain customer-acceptable performance. A little about you

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred and 3+ years’ experience in Safety and DOT Compliance; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Time management and scheduling efficiencies.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, to prioritize and work in a multi-tasked environment.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, equipment, and safety hazards of construction projects is a plus.
  • Ability to handle multiple task at the same time.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Computer skills proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook or similar programs as well as common fleet service software programs.

 

Day-to-day work examples

DOT Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of driver hours of service records by following DOT requirements and resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Audit driver e-logs daily for accuracy and compliance, including violation reports, and prepare periodic reports for Management review.
  • Manage all aspects of tractor and trailer inspection records by DOT requirements (DVIRS) and track through resolution.
  • Coordinate ongoing employee environmental, health, and safety training and certifications.
  • Participate in new employee training, orientation and onboarding processes.
  • Ensure proper documentation of inspection, write up, Vehicle inspection, work order, and re-training as required by policy or regulation.
  • Assist with insurance claim administration.
  • DOT and Non-DOT drug/alcohol program administration.
  • Acquire and maintain state and federal DOT permits.   
  • Maintain active driver files.
  • Perform Clearinghouse reporting and management.
  • Support the development and implementation of written programs that assure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and all other pertinent Federal/State/Local regulations, contract requirements, and internal policy.

 

Safety Responsibilities:

  • Provide governance between NCH safety/regulatory
  • Monitor Safety benchmarks including third party qualification assessments.
  • Provide oversight to Safety Training program and be the subject matter expert
  • Manage Accident, Injury, Illness and Incident reporting and follow up activities
  • Manage environmental emergency response to chemical incidents, spills, releases and follow up activities
