Product Test and Development Technician

This person will build electro-mechanical product concept models and prototypes, develop test procedures and processes, and perform hands-on electrical, mechanical, and automation troubleshooting. A little about you

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in a product development engineering lab environment successfully executing the duties and responsibilities described above.
  • 2-year Technical diploma in a relevant discipline/trade/technology, or 4-year Technology degree in a relevant discipline/trade/technology
  • Experience with data acquisition and control applications such as LabVIEW
  • Evidence of accomplishment and success in the design, test, prototyping, of new or improved electro-mechanical products and automated and test equipment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Skilled with MS Office applications – Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Ability to develop PLC programs from process flowcharts.
  • Strong hands-on experience with, and understanding of, electro-mechanical equipment, process control & test automation, pneumatics, hydraulics, and wiring.
  • Data and facts oriented.
  • Results and action oriented with a high sense of urgency.
  • Able to identify and prioritize tasks.
  • Experience with prototyping equipment and related tools.
  • Excellent mechanical and electrical aptitude with a “hands-on" approach to problem-solving.
  • Ability to follow instructions of engineers, work independently with minimal supervision, and identify and self-direct on unassigned value-add activities.

  • Competent in identifying mechanical parts and components including sizes, ratings, tolerances, finishes, materials, and appropriate applications.
  • Fully capable of operating shop equipment and using hand tools, effectively and safely.
  • General experience in the use of a wide variety of lab and shop tools (ex: drill press, band saw, table saw, cordless power tools, soldering iron, multi-meters, torque wrenches, adhesives, protective coatings, etc.)
  • Self-motivated with the discipline to meet deadlines in an environment of competing priorities and projects


Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience using DFMEA to create test plans
  • Ability to create basic SolidWorks models and drawings translated from sketched or verbal descriptions.
  • Embedded controls systems design skills - circuit design, board level component selection, PCB design, programming, and firmware.


Day-to-day work examples

  • Conceives, designs, specifies, and builds test fixtures, equipment and controls to perform product development testing (i.e. functional, performance, durability, usability) using manual or automated test control systems.
  • Skilled in the selection and application of mechanical, electrical and control components to create test setups.
  • Specify and order project parts and materials, and general lab supplies.
  • Utilize suppliers and outside services to obtain parts and fabrications as needed
  • Tests developmental devices or subsystems, writes technical reports to summarize results
  • Generate Test Procedures and Test Reports where necessary
  • Contributes design and development ideas for new products
  • Reads and interprets P&ID schematics, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and assembly drawings
  • Interface with product development team members to develop and implement the most appropriate test methods for conducting design verification and product validation testing.
  • Create, Build, Operate and Modify Test Equipment
  • Clearly and promptly communicate issues and concerns, support troubleshooting and execute corrective actions.
  • Mount and calibrate basic sensors and components accessories (Limit Switches, Solenoids, Temperature, level sensors).
  • Maintain lab instrumentation and equipment
  • Maintains organization and overall upkeep of the Engineering lab.
  • Ensures that a safe working environment is maintained, and enforces company safety policies for engineering lab occupants
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
